The strongest Leagues in the World in the 1st Decade of 21st Century (2001-2010)

Every year, on December 31, IFFHS determines the strongest leagues in the world. Adding the points scored each year from 2001 to 2010 yields the total points each national league scored during this decade as well as the world ranking of the strongest leagues in the first decade of the 21st century. Using this system also has the advantage that simply by adding the yearly points for each league, it is possible to calculate the rankings for the second decade (starting 2011) and all following ones as well as the world ranking of the strongest leagues for the entire 21st century.

As the strongest league in the world for nine of the last ten years it is no surprise that the Barclays Premier League (England) is The Strongest League in the World in the 1st Decade of the 21st Century (2001-2010), next are Spain’s Primera División, Italy’s Serie A, Brazil’s Série A, and the Bundesliga (Germany). It is still open as to who will take 6th place - the Argentinian or French league.

It is noticeable that the leagues of Scotland, Costa Rica, China, Ghana, Senegal, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and the Seychelles became weaker in the recent years, and the leagues of England, South Africa, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Surinam, Cuba and the Solomon Isles achieved in 2010 their lowest number of points of the 1st Decade (2001-2010). The leagues of the Ukraine, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Nigeria, Cyprus, Syria, Libya and Vietnam were stronger in recent years. The league of Portugal, Belgium, Denmark, Egypt, Republic of Korea, Algeria, Iran, USA, Georgia, Moldava, Belarus, Qatar, Northern Ireland, Sudan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Mali, Indonesia, Congo DR, Malawi, Botswana, Luxembourg, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Swaziland and Tahiti achieved in 2010 the highest annual number of points during the 1st Decade (2001-2010). Consequently, there were as number of changes of positions in the world ranking of the strongest national league of the 1st Decade of the 21st Century.

The top 25 include eight (!) leagues from South America, with Mexico’s Primera División in 10th. The top 50 include three leagues from Asia " Japan, the Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia " and seven (!) from Africa " Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Nigeria,  Algeria, South Africa and Cameroon " as well as one each from South America (Bolivia) and CONCACAF (Costa Rica). The top 50 also include 29 European leagues. For Australia, its Oceania points (up to 2005, when Australia joined the AFC) are added to its Asia points (starting in 2006). Nevertheless the Australian League only achieved 71st place and the league of New Zealand 103rd place.

England therefore has The strongest League in the World in the 1st Decade of the 1st Century (2001-2010), followed by Spain‘s Primera División and Italy‘s Serie A. The fourth-best league is the Brazilian Série A, ahead of the German Bundesliga, the French Ligue 1, the Argentinian Primera División, the Dutch Eredivisie and the Portuguese Liga ZON Sagres. A total of 123 leagues achieved one thousand or more points during the 1st Decade.
